Makes me think. This guy is right. Good post.
The world we live on is falling apart ... while we play games ... I'm astonished by the lack of attention most people pay to what's happening to our world. This is notably true on the internet ... but it doesn't stop there. I'll get back to the internet in a moment ... for now ... the workplace. I asked around where I work ... about political issues ... approximately 10% of my coworkers were up to speed on political issues. "Politics" ... let's clarify what that is.
It's the air you breathe ... the water you drink ... the land your home is on. It's whether you have free speech ... it's whether you can live in a free country ... how your neighbors and children will live ... it's whether you can enjoy life or be told what to do ... it's all politics. Wars ... medical treatment ... the condition of your highways ... who you can marry ... what religion you practice ... what sports you enjoy ... what music you listen to. Yet ... 90% of my coworkers said something like ... "I'm not interested in politics"! Hello? Your life doesn't involve any of the aforementioned subjects? Do you live in a cocoon?
So much for that ... now ... the internet. Browse the online news site and you'll find it all ... from right wing maniac sites to left wing marxist sites ... and many in between. It's all there for the asking ... take your choice. But ... look at message boards ... approximately 95% of them have no clue that the world is coming apart at the seams. Instead ... they chat about new video games ... or fantasy role playing ... aka "Harry Potter" ... or other such silliness. Such names as "New Empire" ... or "Trek Wars" ... etc. Fun is fun ... but did you know that there are 118,000 message boards dedicated to Harry Potter?
Sim City ... that's fun ... Crucial Central is into it with the "CC City" thread ... there's nothing wrong with that. I notice that the CC members who post to CC City and the Neverending thread also post to the other boards and sub boards here ... fun mixed with serous issues is normal and healthy. But ... the majority of message boards are locked into singular brain patterns. They don't know that Sim City and Harry Potter don't exist ... don't affect their lives.
Then ... much worse ... are message boards that don't seem to have anything to chat about except chat rooms and other mesage boards that they don't like. Amazing ... the world falls apart while these cretins concentrate on what they call "flame wars" ... as if a message board is the beginning and end of their lives! I'd venture to guess that the average IQ in such boards is approximately 70-90 ... the imbecile level. I have no time for imbeciles ... I pity them.
I'd estimate that the average IQ in CC is 110-130 ... which is definitely above average ... some are lower ... some noticeably higher ... but the wide variety of opinions remains admirable. Politics is all things ... as I mentioned above. It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out basic issues and debate them. It does take a sober mind and a sense of caring what happens to our world.
Speaking of being sober ... one ironic fact is that you can find better ... more informed political discussion in a bar than you can find on most online message boards or churches. If that doesn't disturb you ... it should. I don't drink a lot ... a few beers now and then ... but it's a sad commentary on our society that virtually nobody can intelligently debate vital issues in church ... on most online message boards ... at work .. or at the supermarket. Yet ... in a bar ... they can do so ... with surprising credibility and knowledge of specific issues and bills before Congress.
How did we descend this far? When did we ... Americans ... become so incredibly stupid? What would our founding fathers think of this stupidity and complacency? Was Ben Franklin right ... when he said "pubs" were the center of "intelligent discourse" in the United States? After all ... Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson both drank heavily. Franklin stated ... "Beer is proof of God's love for mankind". Jefferson said he wrote the Declaration Of Independence in " a bar and brothel" ... that's an astonishing thing to think about.
In the nineteenth century ... voting places were routinely saloons ... that's a fascinating fact to think about. What we need to do now is wonder why ... with all of our modern technology and so called enlightenment ... we pick losers to lead this nation into more and more corruption and chaos. We need to ponder why the internet is being wasted with lunatics operating message boards that make no sense and don't benefit society. For what purpose?
With a gift to contact untold numbers of viewers ... why the choice to behave in a juvenile manner instead? What do children think of adults ... when they see this? What example are we setting? Is this the world we want for the future generation? An internet filled with mindless nonsense?
Politics ... it's your life ... it's the most vital subject of all. You can spend your time being brain dead ... or you can wake up and get involved. The choice is yours ... I choose to be involved ... to study every issue affecting this world and my life ... and your life.
