Heres my suggestion, you should get a custom made skin or maybe even a pre-made template, this will attract more attention to your forum and incourage growth and form more members, also try some codes to improve the look and feel of the forum, try to keep your board description to a minimal, this will stop members from having to read the whole thread descrition, instead post a locked sticky with the descrition inside the forum board instead, maybe have a affiliates section at the bottom, codes can be found here at Members 4 U.
