Round and Round -- An Avatar: The Last Airbender Roleplay
In a time before time and a place before setting, there existed a race of people favored by the cosmos. This was a time before the earthbenders, waterbenders, firebenders, airbenders, non-benders, or the avatar. In this time, the only ones to exist were the lightbenders.
A proud and peaceful people, the lightbenders harnessed the gifts of the stars above to their own ends. Their abilities ranged from barrier project, to dazzling colored lights, to intricate and life-like illusions. There was not a human alive that couldn't at least light a room.
But as the seasons shift from one to another, so do the natural orders of the world change. First came the appearance of the gifted one, the lifesaver, the avatar. His children went on to become the first benders of the four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. As new benders and non-benders alike burst into existence, the practitioners of light slowly began to fade from the world.
Thousands of years later, the lightbenders have been forgotten by nearly all of the people of the world. Barely existent anymore, most now live in secrecy, only using their gifts out of the watchful eyes of the unaware public.
Meanwhile, the four nations are being thrown into a bit of chaos. It was only about 100 years ago that they took hold of their lands. The waterbenders were driven out to the North and South Poles by the other nations, though it wasn't all bad. The cold and icy environments were well-suited to their bending. The Air Nomads separated to different areas of the world of their own volition. So long as they could live in peace, they were fine. The Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, however, weren't as easy to please. Due to sheer force of numbers, the Earth Kingdom was able to command most of the land.
But that doesn't mean that everyone is happy. The sister Water Tribes, despite their great distance, are still having disagreements about culture. Some of the Air Nomads are getting fed up with their solitary ways of life and want to see the world for what it really is. The Fire Nation was never pleased with the paltry sum of land that they ended up with, and they're planning to do something about it. Most importantly, the Earth Kingdom seeks to increase their already-impressive borders -- by force, if necessary. Meanwhile, the few lightbenders that still exist in the world lie in wait to see how their world is faring
There is a complete history and other information on the lightbenders on the site.
